On Wednesday morning at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Apple introduced the new iPad. But it doesn’t have a name. No iPad 3. No iPadHD. It’s just the “new iPad

Nonetheless, as expected, Apple introduced the 3rd generation iPad, which features the long awaited Retina Display with 264 pixels per inch for a total resolution of 2048 x 1536.

Four times more pixels than iPad 2. Razor-sharp text. Richer colors. The Retina display transforms the entire iPad experience. So everything looks and feels incredibly lifelike and perfectly detailed.

But perhaps the biggest announcement of the day was confirmation by Apple of the tablet’s 4G LTE capability.

AT&T and Verizon models will be available, but both will be 3G world ready.

The new iPad is powered by an A5X dual-core CPU and quad-core graphics processor. The refreshed iPad also sports an improved iSight camera, with a 5-megapixel backside illuminated sensor for the rear camera, with a 5-element lens, hybrid IR filter, auto-exposure, and auto-focus and Apple designed ISP.

The 5-megapixel iSight camera features a backside illumination sensor that captures great-looking pictures whether by sunlight or candlelight. Autofocus, tap to focus, and tap to set exposure functions mean every photo you take instantly becomes a frameworthy gem. And with built-in face detection that automatically balances focus and exposure across up to 10 faces, there’s more room for more grins. So everyone look at iPad and say “Cheese.”

Preorders for the new iPad begin today, with the product reaching consumers next Friday, March 16th.

The new iPad will retain the same price points for the current Wi-Fi models and the 3G/4G-ready models will similarly adopt the tradition 3G pricing with older models.

If you’re more interested in an iPad 2 than today’s new iPad, you’re in luck. The entry level iPad 2 is being lowered in price to $399.

Are you excited by the new iPad… enough to get one next week?
