Apple Confirms Acquisition of AlgoTrim

Apple Confirms Acquisition of AlgoTrimOn Wednesday, Apple confirmed its acquisition of AlgoTrim, a Swedish startup that specializes in “data compression.”

Confirmation by Apple was provided to AllThingsD, although few details regarding the purchase are known at this time.

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” spokeswoman Kirstin Huguet said, omitting any specifics.

Founded in 2005 by Anders Berglund, Anders Holtsberg and Martin Lindberg, AlgoTrim develops data-compression technology that simultaneously shortens processing times and reduces file size — just the sort of thing for optimizing mobile imaging and video.

In recent months, Apple has been on an acquisition spree of sorts, gobbling up wireless chip developer Passif Semiconductor, video-discovery outfit Matcha, public-transit app developer Embark, and even crowdsourced location data company Locationary.

Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in early September.
