Apple Blasted for Dropping EPEAT Certification

Officials in San Francisco, California want Apple desktops and laptops plucked from municipal offices ASAP.

The reason for the Mac backlash stems back to Apple’s recent decision to pull the “green” electronics certification off its Mac computers.

The Wall Street Journal subsequently reported that officials in San Francisco have gone for the jugular on Apple since the controversial decision was made. As it turns out, a longstanding policy in San Francisco “mandates that city funds only be used to purchase EPEAT-certified desktops, laptops and monitors.

Apple had removed its laptops and notebooks from a voluntary registry of green electronics, called EPEAT The standard, created jointly by manufacturers, including Apple, government agencies, and activist groups, requires that electronics products be designed for ease in recycling and higher energy efficiency.

“We are disappointed that Apple chose to withdraw from EPEAT,” Melanie Nutter, director of San Francisco’s Department of Environment, tells the WSJ. “We hope that the city saying it will not buy Apple products will make Apple reconsider its participation.”
