Apple on Monday announced that preorders for the new iPhone 5 have already eclipsed 2 million.
The tech giant says this sales bonanza took place all within the device’s first 24 hours of availability.
Last year, the iPhone 4S only saw one million sales during the first 24 hours.
Although demand continues to outpace supply by a wide margin, Apple says that a “majority of preorders” will be delivered to customers on September 21st, the first day of the new iPhone’s commercial availability.
“iPhone 5 preorders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”
The iPhone 5 will be available at Apple’s retail stores starting at 8 a.m. local time on Friday.
