Naming operating system updates after sweet treats has apparently worked for Android. As it turns out, users have developed quite the sweet tooth for all things Android. And the platform’s growth proves nothing less.
By the close of 2012, Google was seeing activations of new Android devices at a fast clip – more than 1.3 million per day. As a result, the most recent versions of the mobile operating system – version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and 4.1 and 4.2 (Jelly Bean) – are growing steadily.
Based on information shared on the Android Developers Dashboard, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean have dramatically slowed Gingerbread’s preeminence, which now retains a 47% share of Android devices.
Just over 29 percent of all Android devices are now powered by Ice Cream Sandwich. Another 10 percent is powered by the combination of both versions of Jelly Bean.
