Amazon, the online retail juggernaut, may have some of the hottest tablets and ereaders on the market today, but the company apparently won’t rest until it can also claim a healthy share of the smartphone market too.
For close to two years now, the rumored Amazon-branded smartphone has been on the drawing board. And, unfortunately for those looking forward to the device, it’s going to remain out of reach for a little while longer.
A new report issued Monday by Sammi Huang and Steve Shen of DigiTimes indicates that the “smartphone is still under its engineering verification test (EVT) period due to issues related to its mobile platform.”
In response to the setback, the Amazon smartphone may not be ready for roll out until June – right around the anticipated time of Apple’s iPhone 5S launch.
“It’s smart for Amazon to get its software perfect before releasing a phone,”says Jay Yarow of Silicon Alley Insider. “It’s going to launch into a very crowded market: iOS and Android dominate, but Microsoft and Blackberry both have very good platforms vying for third place.”
