ABI Forecast: Revenue From Just Mobile Display Ads To Reach $1.5 Billion In 2016

New forecasts out from ABI Research estimate revenue from mobile display ads is set to reach $1.5 billion by 2016.

ABI Research puts mobile marketing and advertising into five categories, according to its forecast, including text messaging, mobile display ads, mobile search, in-app advertising and in-video advertising.  While we’ve seen many estimates on the mobile advertising market as a whole, it’s interesting to see it drilled down a bit further.

ABI said its estimates stem from massive growth in mobile display revenues during 2010, where one six-month period in particular saw spending expand in the US by more than 2.5%.  The research showed about one third of the smartphone owners polled had clicked on at least one mobile advertisement.

ABI’s estimates seem a bit modest in my opinion, especially looking five years into the future.  Mobile display is an enormous chunk of the mobile advertising pie, especially as rich media and “app-like” experiences continue to shape the mobile Web.
