It’s a mobile statistic big enough to make your fingers hurt just thinking about it.
According to a new report from ABI Research, 7 trillion SMS messages will be sent globally in 2011. Based on the projections, those texts will be the social media spawn of 4.2 billion mobile subscribers.
That 7 trillion number, however, is a catch-all for SMS, MMS, mobile email, and IM messaging.
In addition to the obvious reality that more young people than ever have access to mobile devices and, consequently, will continue utilizing texting to an unprecedented extent, ABI notes that low penetration of PCs in many locations around the world is prompting people to use their smartphones and other mobile gadgets for email and other forms of digital messaging.
ABI Practice Director Neil Strother says “Mobile messaging has distinct advantages for companies communicating with their customers. It is universal, cost-effective and reliable, and most people have their phones with them and switched on most of the time.”
