Piper Jaffray has published Taking Stock With Teens, a new report highlighting the hottest trends and purchasing preferences among U.S. teenagers.

When it comes to the mobile device category, smartphones are hot commodities, with Apple’s iPhone leading the way.

91% of teens, the study’s findings reveal, are likely to purchase a smartphone for their next device.

That’s up from 86% last spring and 90% last fall.

iOS is holding steadfast to its lead over Android with teens choosing it as the “most desired operating system.” Just 21% of teens are likely to buy an Android device.

The new report shows that 48% of teens currently own an iPhone, which is up from 40% last fall. Of those in the market for a new phone, 62% intend to buy an iPhone next.

Tablet ownership also continues to grow, Piper Jaffray learned. 51% of teens surveyed own a tablet computer. That’s up from 44% last fall. 68% of tablets owned by teenagers are iPads.
