Women Take The Gold in Social Media Olympics

michael11 years ago01 mins

The summer Olympic games in London have united the world on social media.

But if social networking was an Olympic competition itself, women would take home the gold.

On Friday, Ad Age’s editorial partner, social-media monitoring firm Trendrr, released its latest insights into how the Olympics are impacting social networking.

According to Trendrr estimates, so far 59% of viewers who have been talking about the Olympics on Twitter are female. Normally, social chatter about sports programming tracked by Trendrr skews about 70% male.

As of this writing, the gymnasts who have been subjected to the highest number of tweets are Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, and Gabrielle Douglas.

Meanwhile, U.S. swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lotche are also big subjects on social media channels, although Phelps is generating 28% “more Twitter buzz than Lotche” so far.
