Facebook is interested in acquiring Whatsapp. That’s the big rumor today in the world of social media.
If you’re not familiar, Whatsapp is a multiplatform mobile messaging app that has apparently caught the attention of Facebook. Sources close to the social networking giant claim that Mark Zuckerberg and company may proceed with an acquisition in the coming days and weeks.
At this point, it’s too early to gauge how far along the talks are or if any deals have been proposed. But it sounds like the two parties continue to talk. That’s according to a report Monday from Tech Crunch.
So why exactly is Facebook interested in the mobile messaging platform?
For starters, it would be another way for Facebook to continue extending its touchpoints with mobile consumer. Mark Zuckerberg asserted, on the occasion of reaching 1 billion monthly active users on Facebook, that mobile would be crucial to Facebook reaching the “next billion.”
Being a paid app, Whatsapp could dramatically shake up Facebook’s business model.
So, will the acquisition happen? Stay tuned. MMW will keep you up to date on the matter as new details develop.
