On Monday, reports surfaced that Facebook is interested in acquiring WhatsApp, the multiplatform mobile messaging app that apparently caught the eye of Mark Zuckerberg and was approached about a possible takeover by the one-billion-strong social network.
Being a paid app, WhatsApp was viewed as a purchase that could dramatically shake up Facebook’s business model.
But on Tuesday, the rumor of this potential acquisition was effectively killed by the folks at WhatsApp.
In response to the Tech Crunch article introducing the prospect of acquisition, WhatsApp provided the following statement to All Things D on Tuesday morning:
“The Tech Crunch article is a rumor and not factually accurate. We have no further information to share at the moment.”
So it now looks like the rumor mill got this one wrong.
