Verizon Wireless Plans to Bring Service to Alaska

Verizon Wireless is planning to offer service for the first time in Alaska and will announce the details in coming weeks.

The news of Verizon’s expansion comes five months after the Federal Communication Commission sanctioned Verizon’s request to obtain a broadband license for the state of Alaska.

AT&T, which already offers service in Alaska, will now face a substantial challenge in “The Last Frontier” from the nation’s largest mobile carrier. Since adding the iPhone into its expansive smartphone portfolio earlier this year, Verizon is believed to have already captured better then 12% of all iPhone users in the US market.

Alaska, however, has recently become the “new frontier” for mobile operators and mobile phone makers. In addition to the looming battle for dominance between AT&T and Verizon, Apple is planning to open a retail store at the Fifth Avenue Mall in Anchorage, Alaska.

This Apple store will become the northern-most Apple store in existence, only 320 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
