Less than two months removed from the last iPhone refresh, rumors abound that Apple is actively preparing the next-generation iPhone 5S.

That’s according to a trusted source speaking in confidence today with Digitimes. If the information coming out of the Asian supply chain is, indeed, accurate… the iPhone 5S will exist as hardware before the end of December.

Apple is expected to begin trial production of a new version of its iPhone 5, or iPhone 5S, in December with initial production volumes likely to top 50,000-100,000 units, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

The source does admit, however, that the so-called iPhone 5S will not be ready for widespread global release before year’s end. In fact, the next iPhone refresh isn’t expected until at least after the close of the first quarter of 2013.

Around that time, Digitimes says, Apple is also likely to release “a new version of iPad a quarter later than the iPhone 5S, since the display resolution of its latest version of iPad has come out lower than expected.”

Wow, someone must had worked REALLY hard to dig that report up… please, it's the phone business, manufacturers don't take a year or two out until they start working on their next phone, they will have been working on this months before the iPhone 5 was launched, I'm surprised they don't already have a working model.

I have worked with other manufacturers and have actively used devices that are a good 6 to 10 months away from consumer launch – thats what happens when you make things – time doesnt' stop.. innovate or die…

I was surprised when Apple refreshed the iPad range having only released the iPad 3 earlier in the year so to hear this does not surprise me. I hope Apple actually take their time with developing new products because with the likes of Samsung now overtaking Apple in terms of sales it would be a shame to see a disappointing phone or tablet released just to keep the competitors away for a short period.
