Sources from the far east reported Monday that Apple will refresh its globally popular iPad mini later this summer.
With shipments of Apple’s first-generation iPad mini still strong, the rush to release a second-generation iPad mini in the spring has subsided.
Apple is now moving ahead with plans to roll out the second-generation iPad mini with Retina Display during the third quarter of 2013.
Japanese tech news sites CNYes and Macotakara report that Apple’s current expectations call for 55 million iPad mini units (first and second generation models) to ship during 2013.
Apple is said to be planning a second-generation iPad mini launch in conjunction with the iPad 5’s debut, which is also on tap for a late summer market introduction.
The iPad 5 is expected to present an attractive redesigned aluminum alloy metal chassis and other new hardware that will resemble a design similar to the iPad mini, including a thinner bezel and lighter frame.
